The Pipe Organ Mice

"Henry “Father” Willis was the foremost organ builder of the Victorian era. One day, towards the end of his life, he was visiting Elgin Place Congregational Church in Glasgow, where he was designing a new organ for the building. As he was working, he heard a sound so beautiful that it made him start. Peering closely, he saw a tiny mouse. The beautiful sound was created by the mouse singing a beautiful high C. The little mouse was scared, and was about to run away, but Father Willis said,

“Do not be afraid, dear mouse! I would not hurt you, for God has given you a wonderful voice with sweetness of sound and excellent pitch. Indeed, you are an inspiration to me to work harder so that the notes on this organ will be just as perfect!”

So begins the tale of The Pipe Organ Mice former residents of the Willis II Organ presently being worked upon by George Willis and Sons, Organ makers at their workshop in Liverpool.

Written as an entertainment for children and the young at heart this unlikely tale made it's debut at a Special Event to thank donors in March 2025. Since then its popularity has led to the suggestion that copies be sent to to the The British Library Document Supply Centre in Boston Spa!
