From Antiquity to Baroque: a series of talks with music on the pipe organ repertoire, 7.00pm, 11th September 2026

"Mighty roarings with the lightest touch" is how the Greek engineer Ctesibius of Alexandria who designed it around 246 BC, described the earliest water-powered organ, the hydraulis. His description suggests that its sound may have been a little like the modern pipe organ. Played during Roman gladiatorial games, theater, and public festivals rather than early churches the hydraulis sound was capable of filling open-air arenas.
