After over 12 years at St Mary’s Cathedral, our beloved Cathedral Organist, Steven McIntyre, will be moving on. In November Steven will take up the post of Director of Music at Dunblane Cathedral - we are delighted for him but sorry to see him go.
Recently Provost of St Mary's, The Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth interviewed Steven for live broadcast and you can see it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF4XKmq2bfY.
Steven read Music at the University of Glasgow, and is a Fellow of both Trinity College London and the Royal College of Organists. He has been recipient of a Sir Thomas Beecham Trust scholarship; the Limpus, Shinn and Durrant prize (for FRCO); and the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
As an undergraduate, Steven was awarded the Flentrop Scholarship from the Royal Philharmonic Society, enabling him to study on the historic organs of Alkmaar and Haarlem with Pieter van Dijk and Jos van der Kooy. More recently, he was one of three inaugural Tunnock Scholars from Scotland’s Churches Trust to study on extant Parisian organs of historical importance.
Solo recitals have taken place across the UK and abroad. As accompanist, Steven can regularly be heard on radio and television. He has recorded for Regent (Paisley Abbey Choir) and with Linn (Cappella Nova) on a disc of new music by Sir James MacMillan. Reviews hail his “sparkling performance” (Gramophone) and that “[his] superb technique spoke volumes” (Dundee Courier).
Steven currently combines a career in education alongside his career as a musician.
Steven is a founder member of Sowne of Organe which presents detailed surveys of surviving historic organs in Scotland.
The Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral hails Steven as ‘one of the finest liturgical musicians I have known’.
Steven has been an inspiring and passionate advocate for the new Willis II organ currently being renovated at St Mary’s Cathedral where the present organ is nearing the end of its life.
A valued member of the An Organ for Glasgow fundraising team, Steven is described by a fellow team member, ’Steven combines good humour, hard work and great wisdom. He will be sorely missed, and we wish him well.’
